McGrath signs with CSU-Pueblo
Mullen keeper lands late deal with ThunderWolves after planning to be a walk-on at Metro State.
Andrew McGrath was set to be a walk-on candidate for the Metropolitan State soccer team.
However, the recently graduated Mullen senior got a late break – last week after officials from CSU-Pueblo reached out to him, McGrath visited the campus and eventually signed a letter-of-intent with the Thunder Wolves.
McGrath, a keeper, said he had no problem heading to Metro State, especially when considering the current college landscape post-pandemic. With all of the transfers and extra years given, it has greatly affected the recruitment of high-school seniors, so McGrath is thrilled CSU-Pueblo approached him.
Nothing wrong with happenstance stepping in …
“They reached out a couple of weeks ago because they lost a keeper,” McGrath said. “I didn’t know it was coming, but I thought it might be a good opportunity.”
He said CSU-Pueblo coaches told him he could come into camp and compete for one of the two keeper spots.
McGrath, 5-foot-10, 168 pounds, is fresh from a big fall. He was an intricate part of the Mustangs reaching the Class 4A Championship. Mullen finished as runner-up, had a 17-2-1 record and outscored its opposition by a combined 88-8. McGrath started in 19 games and only allowed six goals.
He had a 3.34 grade-point average at Mullen and plans to major in athletic training.
A season ago, CSU-Pueblo won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division II field.
