Mullen Hires Roosevelt Leslie to head Boys' Basketball Program

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Former Mustangs JV coach, Roosevelt Leslie, has accepted role of program Head Coach. Coach Leslie brings extensive experience as a player and coach to the courts this season.
Roosevelt Leslie was doing what he loves, coaching basketball, when he first heard the news that the head-coaching position for Mullen’s boys basketball was open.

Leslie was in Puerto Rico at the time, heading one of the many levels in which he has coached, and didn’t really consider applying.

But after talking with multiple parents who insisted he pursue it, Leslie did, interviewed twice and has been named the program’s new leader.

“I’m excited,” Leslie stated on a call as he was taking his son Micah (Mullen class of 2022) to college. “Any day I can coach basketball, it’s paradise.”

Leslie served as junior-varsity coach for Mullen the past three seasons, a small segment of his considerable experience as a player and coach.

A native of basketball-crazed Indiana, Leslie moved to Colorado and played at Montbello High School and Colorado Christian University. He played in four countries and has coached with Athletes in Action; Fellowship of Christian Athletes; various clubs, including Chauncey Billups Elite; at Abraham Lincoln, Ridge View Academy, D’Evelyn and Valor Christian high schools, and with CCU.

Another Leslie son, Jordan, will play as a junior in the 2022-23 season.

“I love Mullen,” Roosevelt said. “It’s about family. I’m looking forward to building relationships with the new kids and taking their basketball to the next level. We’ll work hard and compete."

Joey Mahmood, Associate Athletic Director at Mullen states “We could not be more excited to have Coach Leslie lead the boys basketball program.  This is one of those dream hires where Coach has all the basketball knowledge, he’s able to coach the students and he’s a man of Christ with character and lives the Lasallian Mission every day.  He will be teaching in the wellness department also, which is great to have --  in-building coaches.”

In following Bob Caton, who has coached for decades in Colorado, Leslie added: “It is with great honor and privilege  to be able to pick up where coach Caton is leaving off, as he is one of the most respected coaches in Colorado history. He has been a great mentor and advocate for me in the process and preparation for this new step in my coaching career.”
