Mullen Announces New Girls Basketball Coach

by Neil Devlin, Sports Information Director
Tonia Jones said she is ready to embrace the success of one of Colorado’s most successful girls’ basketball programs.
Tonia Jones, named head coach of Mullen’s girls’ basketball program, vows to keep Mullen among the elite.  “Oh, my gosh,” Jones said, “they are huge shoes to fill.  We’ve got a lot of work to do.  There will be a little transition, but we don’t want to let it get away, and we have a legacy to honor.”

With notable ties as a player and a coach, Coach Jones has come in contact with some impressive names, places and institutions through the game, locally and afar.

As a player at Spearfish High School, Coach Jones went up against Rapid City’s Becky Hammon who later played at Colorado State and currently coaches the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces.  From high school Coach Jones went on to compete at Regis University for two years and then Metropolitan State.

After her playing career, Coach Jones jumped into coaching and worked with former Nuggets stars Ervin Johnson and Mike Evans and their EJ Hoops Basketball Club.  Later, she went on to coach for former Nugget Keith Van Horn and his Premier Basketball Club.

With a daughter in Mullen’s sophomore class, Coach Jones said, “I love this school.  I felt immediately attached to it.  It’s more than a job.  It’s a passion.”

Mullen Athletic Director, Melynda Brown had this to say about the addition of Tonia Jones to the Mullen family, “We are very excited to welcome Coach Jones as our new head girls’ basketball coach here at Mullen High School. With Coach Jones’ experience, both as a coach and as a player, we know she is the right woman for the job as we enter a new era of Mullen Athletics.”
