Freshmen girls coach Maresa Mosca named to begin the program that will compete in the spring.

Maresa Mosca said playing volleyball “took a toll on my body.”

Now, she’ll find out what the game does to her mentally calling the shots.

The Mullen graduate has been named head coach of the school’s new volleyball team for boys. The Mustangs will debut in the spring season and add to the school’s array of sports offerings.

“I am ecstatic,” Mosca said of the opportunity.

She said she has been working for months on open gyms, getting workouts and dealing with competitors who have a lot of passion for the game.

“Hoping to be real good” from the outset, Mosca said she has a few players with assorted experience and realizes she will encounter most everyone with interest in playing volleyball, including “kids who have never played the game.”

It will be Mullen’s eighth sport in the final season of the school year.

“We need to just teach them the fundamentals and with the support we have it should be day-by-day,” Mosca said of progressing into the first season and establishing the program.

She is a 2016 graduate of Mullen and played on the varsity team for three seasons before going on to one as a Metropolitan State Roadrunner. Mosca is in her second season teaching at Mullen and doubles as freshmen coach for Mustangs girls. Mosca is in the Sports Performance Department at school.

“I’m excited,” she said.

Said Mullen athletic director Melynda Brown: “Boys volleyball is an up-and-coming (sanctioned) sport and we are happy to jump on this bandwagon. Coach Mosca understands the hard work and dedication it takes to be a successful student-athlete at Mullen and will be a great role model for our young men.

“Having her in the building as an educator and on the girls volleyball coaching staff is just another plus with this hire. Her passion and energy are an excellent foundation in which to build this program. Mullen athletics is lucky to have her.”
