10-3 Roundup

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Boys golf gets another dose of ups and downs; softball, boys soccer and girls volleyball suffer losses.

An already interesting boys golf season turned even more interesting for Mullen on Monday.

The game with blatant, confounding ups and downs certainly delivered -- at Pelican Lakes Golf Course in Windsor, Ethan Karr rallied to shoot a 5-over-par 77 and Jack Newton, who had been playing so well, was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard, a penalty he called on himself.

“It’s golf,” head coach Jerry Koehler said.

Karr, a senior, was 5-over after four holes, but ground out net par the rest of the way, including birdies on Nos. 16 and 18, notably a par-4 final hole that played 490 yards uphill.

Koehler noted that Karr nearly birdied the final four holes, leaving his attempts right at the cups.

“He turned it around and played very well,” the coach said.

As for Newton, he inadvertently signed for a wrong score on No. 16. He noticed the mistake while many were leaving the course and informed his coach, who appealed but knew the outcome.

“If he didn’t report it, he would have had to live with it the rest of his life,” Koehler said, noting how proud he was that Newton willingly came forward.

Karr will compete in Tuesday’s second round as will Newton, but his score won’t count in the field.

They are additional aspects to a 2022 season for Mullen that has had plenty of highs and lows, including top player, Ryan Brady, who finished first in the 5A-based Centennial League but failed to qualify in regionals despite shooting a solid 78 and participating in a seven-player playoff; Newton earning his first career hole-in-one; Newton finishing first in the final tournament of the season by shooting 1-under par; and the Mustangs not qualifying for the state tournament as a team for the first time in years.

“This is the game,” Koehler said.

Through one round, Riverdale Ridge holds a two-shot lead over Cheyenne Mountain in the team chase and Denver North’s Sawyer Klein shot 3-under 69 to take a one-shot lead.

On Tuesday, Newton will go off No 10 at 9:20 a.m. and Karr will begin on No. 1 at 9:20 a.m.
