Mackenzie to be a Diplomat
Baseballer Colin Mackenzie commits to Franklin & Marshall in Pennsylvania; senior also headed to Pueblo Thursday for 4A individual tennis tournament.
Colin Mackenzie said he was looking for a college-baseball program with high character.
He is convinced he found one in Franklin & Marshall.
The Mullen outfielder-pitcher recently took his visit to Lancaster, Pa., and decided to commit to the Diplomats of Division III.
“I’m super-excited,” Mackenzie said. “It’s a great fit for me and my family. The coach there is fantastic with a great vision of the program.
“What stood out the most is he’s collecting players witrh better personalities than baseball players themselves.”
Mustangs head coach Phil Stanford is confident of Mackenzie’s selection.
“It’s a great fit,” he said. “Colin is always trying to make his teammates better. He knows how to win.”
The past spring, Mackenzie hit .343 with 10 runs batted in and was second on the team with 31 runs scored as the Mustangs were 18-6.
In addition, he’s headed to Pueblo for Thursday;s beginning of the new individual bracket of the Class 4A tennis tournament. He’ll be playing at No. 1 doubles.
“To know what kind of person he is,” Stanford said, “look at his success in winning in doubles. He was surrounded by really good players in this (baseball) program and he has helped educate others in our program.”
Mackenzie will major in business at Franklin & Marshall. And his father, Rob, was a pitcher at Lehigh University, about 75 miles away.
