Patrick Duke tops 'Stangs at 4A individual tennis tourney; O'Connell and Sushinsky all-league in cross country; boys soccer and girls volleyball lose in league.
Patrick Duke, Mullen’s No. 2 singles, advanced to the semifinals on Thursday in the new Class 4A individual tournament held at Pueblo’s City Park.
A senior, Duke won in the preliminaries and quarterfinals by straight-set victories, losing only a combined eight games.
He will face Fabian Frenz of Colorado Academy in Friday’s semifinals that will begin the day’s rounds at 9 a.m.
In all, Mullen advanced four lines out of prelims – Duke; Nicholas Ruegsegger-Colin Mackenzie, No. 1 doubles; John Lenich-Aiden Guthrie, No. 2 doubles; and Liam Cook-Luke DeNezza, No. 4 doubles.
Head coach Jeff Lepley called it “a weird, wild day.”
Playbacks will begin after semifinals and Lepley said he hopes to add a couple of his doubles teams to the mix and compete for placings.
PRELIMINARIES
No. 1 singles – Jack Barker lost to Owen Duffy, George Washington, 6-4, 6-7, 3-6.
No. 2 singles – Patrick Duke def. Dean Trujillo, Thomas Jefferson 6-1, 6-1.
No. 3 singles – Carson Duke lost to Evan Severs, Grand Junction 3-6, 5-7.
No. 1 doubles – Nicholas Ruegsegger-Colin Mackenzie def. Marlow Hampton-Alex Speyer, Evergreen 6-3, 6-1.
No. 2 doubles – John Lenich-Aiden Guthrie def. Trey Mays-Patton Truchel, Evergreen 6-3, 6-0.
No. 3 doubles – Jackson Alexander-Josh Wanja lost to Gavin Foonberg-Eddie Strand, George Washington 6-0, 6-2.
No. 4 doubles – Liam Cook-Luke DeNezza def. Morgan Parrish-Gabe Hollingshead 6-2, 6-3.
QUARTERFINALS
No. 2 singles -- Patrick Duke def. Steven Zhou, Cheyenne Mountain 6-4, 6-2.
No. 1 doubles – Nicholas Ruesegger-Colin Mackenzie lost to Charlie May-Michael McKee 5-7, 6-4, 5-7.
No. 2 doubles – John Lenich-Aiden Guthrie lost to Rowan Brown-Luca Siringo, Colorado Academy 6-3, 3-6, 2-6.
No. 4 doubles – Liam Cook-Luke DeNezza lost to Marco Fenton-Liam O’Drobinak 4-6, 0-6.
Cross Country
At Arapahoe County Fairgrounds, the Mustangs competed in the Centennial League Championships and earned two all-league selections.
Jacob Sushinsky finished fifth in 16 minutes, 28.30 seconds and Amy O’Connell was eighth, 19:21.50, as both earned all-Centennial.
As groups, the Mullen boys were 7th and girls eighth.
Head coach Joe Welling said his teams used the race as workouts for next week’s regionals in 4A to be run in Grand Junction.

Boys Soccer
In Aurora, the Mustangs gave up a second-half goal and lost 1-0 to host Cherokee Trail in the Centennial League.
Competing at Legacy Stadium, Mullen is 8-3-1 overall, 2-2-1 in league.
The Mustangs will resume play on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at home against Arapahoe in league, 4 p.m.

Volleyball
In Aurora, the Mustangs were swept by host Grandview 25-10, 25-16, 25-17 in the first round of the Centennial League Challenge,
Mullen is 7-10 overall.
