In announcing his college choice, Mullen’s Ryan Jackson quickly pointed to three reasons why he chose to attend Benedictine in Atchison, Kan., and join its baseball team.

First was the “religious aspect,” he said. “It’s a big deal for me. ‘;ve been to Catholic school my whole life.”

Second was “education … I’m trying to get into medical school and (the Ravens) are actually building a medical school on campus.”

And third, “when I went there (for a visit),” Jackson said, “I walked around and the people there were very nice, very inclusive. I was just very happy.”

In primarily a utility role in 2022, Jackson, 6-feet, 165 pounds, was used as a pinch-runner, backup outfielder and spot pitcher.

Mustangs head coach Phil Stanford will be looking for more in 2023.

“We’re expecting him to come in and give us some innings (on the mound),” Stanford said. “He had a really good summer, put up some numbers, showed some pop and Benedictine showed some strong interest in him.”

Jackson, who has a 3.25 grade-point average, will be one of three Mustangs to sign early in November. Colin Mackenzie will join Franklin & Marshall and Sage Hurley is headed to Webster.

“I think I made the right choice and will be very happy (at Benedictine).” Jackson said.
