Zingler commits to DU golf

Mullen senior Kaitlin Zingler will sign with the local Pioneers in November.

Mullen’s Mustangs won’t have to go far to keep up with Kaitlin Zingler after she graduates in the spring.

She’ll be close – the senior has committed to the University of Denver Pioneers and their women’s golf team.

Offered three weeks ago, Zingler said “it was the best spot academically and for golf. They’re a top-50 program. I’m looking forward to it.”

An accomplished player with a plus-1 handicap, Zingler lost her freshman season at Mullen because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic after playing the opening match at Springhill Golf Course in Aurora.

She was seventh as a sophomore and ninth the past spring in Class 4A, helping the Mustangs to third- and second-place finishes, respectively, in the team chase.

Also accomplished on the junior circuit, Zingler, who has a career-low of 5-under par – she shot 67 at Aurora Hills G.C. – is top-ranked in Colorado her class and second overall among all in-state juniors by Junior Golf Scoreboard.

“I think she’s very capable of playing golf at a high level and I know that Kaitlin is a high-achieving student as well,” Mullen girls golf coach Kate Walker said. “The challenge of college golf and a really strong academic institution … she couldn’t have asked for a better fit.”

Zingler respects the always tough 4A schoolgirl circuit, but she also finished as the No. 2 player in the past two Centennial League seasons that are mainly 5A.

“It’s a really neat (statistic),” Walker said.

Additional Zingler experience includes a spot in the IMG Junior World Championships in Torrey Pines, Calif.; being a semifinalist in the Colorado State Junior Championship; and other AJGA appearances.

The major at DU for Zingler will be business analytics or finance and she has a 4.3 grade-point average.

She will sign with DU early next month.
