New 'Stangs girls swim and dive coach is Cody Spencer

Cody Spencer comes to Mullen girls swimming and diving with a pretty good idea of what Mullen has to offer.

Having competed at nearby Green Mountain in Lakewood and Colorado Mesa University,

Spencer will get to experience what he has heard.

"Oh, I mean, this is from everything I remember growing up in town,” he said. “Mullen is a prestigious school, and it seems like a great opportunity to get them to a good spot.

“And it’s not just about winning or goals … it’s about becoming better individuals.”

In taking over the Mustangs girls’ program, Spencer brings assorted credentials.

In addition to swimming for the Jefferson County Rams and the Mavericks, he led the District 51 co-op boys team of Grand Junction, Central (G.J.), Fruita Monument and Palisade, the Griffons, for five seasons. He also led the Fruita Monument girls and nearby Bear Creek girls. It included multiple league titles and state competitors.

He also has been a club coach, taught lessons, and has run and maintained assorted pools.

“Coach Spencer comes to Mullen with 12 seasons under his belt, coaching both on the girls and boys’ sides across the state,” athletic director Melynda Brown said. “With his experience as a swimmer and a coach, as well as Mullen’s long-standing tradition of excellence in the pool, we are confident in coach Spencer’s ability to lead our young ladies to their highest abilities.

"We are excited about where Mullen girls swim and dive is headed.”

Spencer realizes the challenge that Mullen does not have its own pool and is in the process of meeting team members and hopefuls.

“We’ll see what’s out there and see if I’m the right fit,” he said
