Late surge has suited 'Stangs

Mullen wins 3-of-4 matches in Colorado Springs and 5 of its past 6 to ccap its regular season at 12-11 and qualify for the 4A playoffs.
 
Mullen completed its regular season on Saturday as Mustangs fortunes have changed considerably.

Over Friday-Saturday, they won three-of-four matches in a Class 4A-based tournament in Colorado Springs at World Arena and have been victorious in five of their past six to end scheduled play at 12-11 and qualified for regionals.

As of late Saturday night, Mullen was No. 26 in 4A RPI playoff-qualifying and its five-set victory over Fort Collins had yet to be factored into the formula.

On Friday, Mullen def. Air Academy 25-8, 20-25, 25-18, 25-14, and Mead 25-10, 25-15, 18-25, 27-25.

On Saturday, the Mustangs lost to Erie 22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 22-25, and defeated Fort Collins 25-16, 18-25, 21-25, 25-16, 15-13.

This was after the Mustangs had won their final two Centennial League Challenge matches, over Smoky Hill and Arapahoe.

The top 36 teams advance to next weekend’s regionals.
