They’re in!

After turning its 2022 season around at the midway point, Mullen’s Mustangs have qualified for the Class 5A playoffs. They will meet Fossil Ridge in next weekend’s preliminaries in Fort Collins.

The Mustangs are the No. 23 seed in the 24-team outlay. They are 5-5. The Sabercats are the No. 10 and 8-2.
On Sunday, head coach Jeremy Bennett allowed that he’s “relieved,” as Mullen was 1-4 in nonleague before going 4-1 in the Front Range South and finishing runner-up to Legacy.

“I think our kids played really well down the stretch and got better,” Bennett said. “I think they’re all excited to be in the playoffs ... and we’re getting healthy.”

After a 40-0 loss to Legacy in Week 8, the Mustangs beat Prairie View at Henderson 38-23 and used a 29-0 second half to roll past visiting Rangeview 35-14 the past week to qualify. Aaron Wehmeyer rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown. Ben Krza threw for 145 yards and was picked off once, but had three short rushes for TDs. Freshman Dante Dupuch added a rushing TD. And wide receiver Jordan Leslie turned in another big effort, grabbing six receptions for 122 yards.

Against the Sabercats, Bennett said, “we’ll need to control the clock, we’ll need to run the ball.”

In their regular-season finale, the Sabercats blitzed Poudre 38-6.

Interestingly, waiting for the Mullen-Fossil Ridge winner is No. 7 Regis, the Mustangs’ longtime rival.

Plus, Mullen enters the first round of the big-school playoffs with 599 victories in program history.
