2-3 Winter Roundup

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Cold shooting hurst boys hoops; girls fall at Arapahoe; ice hockey rolled by CA.

Cold shooting stymied Mullen early as the Mustangs dropped a 66-52 decision to Arapahoe on Friday night in the Centennial League at Hutchison Fieldhouse.

The Mustangs slipped to 8-11 overall, 2-4 in league. They also stand 38th in the Class 6A RPI playoff-qualifying – 32 teams will advance to the big-school bracket.

On Senior Night and coming off a rousing road victory at Cherokee Trail in Aurora, the Mustangs missed their first 13 shot attempts. They went without a field goal in the opening quarter and missed three more times before finally converting one 10 minutes, 13 seconds into the game.

Mullen twice cut its deficit to 12 points in the second half, but got no closer as continued cold shooting, turnovers and defensive lapses remained issues.

Jordan Leslie again led Mullen with 18 points. Lukas Castillo, who was one of the five 12th- graders to start, contributed 14 points.

The Mustangs will host Eaglecrest on Wednesday, Feb. 8, in their final regular-scheduled game. Their remaining three matchups will be in the Centennial League Challenge, a sort of three-game, mini-tournament based on regular-season performance..
