Wrestling postseason is here; girls swim and dive completes regular season; hockey loses to CA.

Mullen girls were ninth on Saturday in the 15-team Northridge Tournament in Greeley.

Jzunie Jones (170 pounds) and Karin Simons (155) were runnersup.

Maggie Martinez (190) was third and Cassandra Linhardt was 1-2 at 100.

The Mustangs totaled 33 points.

Loveland was the team champion with 117. Greeley West was second with 98.5.

Saturday’s bouts were the final of the regular season for both Mustangs genders. Regional rounds will be next weekend, Feb. 10-11.

Mustangs boys will be in the Class 3A Metro Region at host Abraham Lincoln with Alameda, Arvada, Bennett, Denver West, Elizabeth, Englewood, Faith Christian, Fort Morgan, John F. Kennedy, Holy Family, Severance, Summit and University. Mustangs girls will be in the Metro Region at Douglas County in Castle Rock also containing Adams City, Arapahoe, Arvada, Calhan, Columbine, Denver East, Denver North, Denver South, Douglas County, Evergreen, Far Northeast, Fort Morgan, Jefferson, Mountain Vista, Overland, Pomona, Regis Jesuit, Soroco, and Strasburg.

The Colorado Championships are Feb. 16-18 at Ball Arena. Mustangs boys were third in 3A the past season and had a second consecutive individual winner. Mustangs girls had their first sanctioned weight-class champion.

Entering regionals, Mullen boys are ranked No. 2 by On The Mat. Tony Herrera (106, first), Dale O’Blia, a two-time defending Colorado champion (113, first), Gilbert Antillon (126, 5th), Isaac Chavez (138, second), Kaleb Valdez-Lemos (175, first) and Oliver Scelza (190, 12th) are in the listings heading into the postseason. For girls, Jones is No. 9.

Mullen tean score – 33 points, 9th place, 15 teams.

100 pounds – Cassandra Linhardt (4-14) was 1-2.

155 – Karin Simons (4-3) runnerup.

170 – Jzunie Jones (18-6) runnerup.

190 – Maggie Martinez (7-6) third.

Girls Swimming and Diving

At Arapahoe High School, the Mustangs were seventh in the Centennial League ‘A’ Championships.

Mullen compiled 156 points. Regular big-school power Cherry Creek was first with 901.

A couple of Mustangs relay teams had the program’s top finishes. Their 200-yard medley relay team of Genessa Capra, Brigid Anderson, Shannon McCarthy and Annie Kozlevchar (2 minutes, 3.82 seconds) and 400 freestyle relay group of Sally Kohara, Genna Hockin, Anderson, Grace Hoyt (4:27.47) were seventh.

Ice Hockey

At The Edge in Littleton, the Mustangs turned in a better defensive effort against Colorado Academy before losing 6-2 in the 4A North.

Mullen is 3-13 overall, 1-6 in its loop.

CA had scored 12 times in Friday’s 10-goal victory at Big Bear.

On Saturday, Mullen got goals from Cooper Oatman and Ben Hollingsworth, both in the second period.

William Dobson turned in 32 saves as Mullen was outshot 38-27.

Mullen will face Palmer of Colorado Springs on Friday, Feb. 10, 5:30 a.m., at the University of Denver’s Magness Arena.
