Mullen falls 60-42 at Monarch; 19-game playoff winning streak halted; team finished 11-13.

LOUISVILLE – Mullen’s season came to an end on Tuesday night in a 60-42 loss at Monarch in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.

The Mustangs, four-time defending Colorado champions in 4A when there was a 5A system, finished 11-13. The loss also snapped a 19-game postseason winning streak.

Mullen, the No. 29 seed, never led – it misfired on its first 15 field-goal attempts, did not score in the first quarter and finally got on the board 33 seconds into the second quarter on a basket by junior Allison Schwertner.

Fourth-seeded Monarch, now 23-1, also weathered three moves by the Mustangs down the stretch, when they got within 12, 10 and 11 points.

The Coyotes made 14 free throws over the final 8 minutes to keep Mullen chasing.

Sophomore Ryker Thomas topped Mullen with 11 points, all in the fourth quarter.

In their first season under new head coach Tonia Jones, the Mustangs also were 3-4 in the Centennial League and won two-of-three games in the league tournament.

They will lose just one senior for 2023-24.
