Early Spring Roundup

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Baseball, boys and girls lacrosse; girls soccer; track & field; and boys volleyball begin; lighter schedule this week because of spring break.

In the opening days of the spring season for Mullen …

Thomas Stewart ripped two home runs and was dominant on the mound as the Mustangs held off host Mead 8-5 the past Thursday in nonleague.

The season opener had Stewart, a sophomore, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and four runs batted in, and was walked twice; and as the starting pitcher, the righthander struck out a whopping 14 in five innings with no walks.

Ryan Jackson added a double and Colin Mackenzie a triple.

The Mustangs, ranked No. 10 in Class 4A, followed with a 2-1 nonleague loss at 5A No. 2 Broomfield on Saturday.

According to head coach Phil Stanford, Mullen “left too many runners on base (eight),” left the bases loaded once and stranded a runer at third base to end the game.

Jackson’s strong pitching outing was wasted, Stanford said, and Mullen was held to six hits. Sage Hurley, Stewart and Ryan Brady each had two with Hurley and Brady each doubling and tripling.

The Mustangs had four errors, but did not surrender an unearned run.

Next is a trip this week for a four-game stretch in New Orleans.
