Mullen Student Receives Prestigious Boettcher Scholarship

By Miracle Michael, Communication and Marketing Manager
Lia Dino, Mullen graduating senior, has been selected as a recipient of the Boettcher Foundation Scholarship. The Boettcher Scholarship aims to recognize Colorado’s top students' leadership and service. Lia is one of only 50 students to receive the scholarship this year. The prestigious four-year scholarship includes full tuition and fees, a book allowance, and a yearly stipend towards living expenses to attend any Colorado school of the recipient's choice. The Boettcher Scholarship aims to prepare the next generation of leaders in Colorado.
Lia’s exemplary character shined throughout her time at Mullen as an accomplished leader and student athlete. A natural leader in the classroom and on the court, Lia has held positions in Varsity Volleyball, Mock Trial, National Social Studies Honor Society, Young Democrats, Swag Club, and Student Council as Co-President.

Dino’s mother credits Mullen’s faculty and staff for their support by stating, “They have not only supported Lia and her peers in discerning their values, but also have trusted and empowered them with opportunities to activate their values in such meaningful ways.  We are so excited and hopeful about the future, because these Mustangs know what it means to learn and lead as part of a flourishing, loving community.”

As Dino nears the final weeks of her senior year, she leaves the following for her student body: “Though it is going to be a tough transition away from the Mullen community, I am overjoyed with the assurance that the Class of 2023 is leaving the school in the hands of some of the most capable, innovative, and passionate students that have ever walked the Mullen halls.”

She plans to attend the University of Colorado, Boulder where she’ll study pre-law. She looks forward to getting involved on campus through intramural volleyball and the CU Mock Trial Team. Lia Dino is the third recipient of the Boettcher Scholarship from Mullen High School in the past five years. Lia joins Liz Cutting ‘22 and Gabriele Brown ‘18 in receiving this prestigious award.

Lasallian Educators who have worked closely with Lia during her time at Mullen have this to say:
“Lia is a thinker and a doer. She studies the world around her and asks questions in order to better understand others. She does not operate with pretense; rather, she is motivated by a curiosity in why the world works the way it does, and a willingness to make it better. Her leadership is typified by her level of care and involvement in a number of areas: drives, spirit weeks, service trips, peer leadership, club involvement, athletics. However, I think her strongest moments of leadership lie in the quiet moments. The gentle encouragement of fellow student leaders to be better, the stronger discussions with her peers to do better, and the countless time and energy dedicated to bringing our school community closer together, celebrating our differences rather than feeling divided by them - these are the types of service I will remember Lia for: authentic, subtle, and wholly reflective of the community she is a part of”.

“Lia was a Volleyball varsity setter for 3 seasons and was always a great leader on and off the court… As a setter she was the on court leader running the offense.  She set an example for the other girls on the team and in the program by putting in the extra time outside of practice to improve and to set an example at the open gyms for everyone else.  One small example of what she would do was when running the mile at our pre-season camp after she was finished she went back to run with the last girl on the track to make sure she was able to finish the mile”.
