10 teams compete in a cold, busy week.
 
Jordan Weber scored six goals and Dri Eckman had four as Mullen girls lacrosse beat St. Mary’s Academy 19-9 the past Thursday for their first victory of the season.

At Brother Bernard Kinneavy Field at De La Salle Stadium, the Mustangs built a 12-7 halftime lead in the Class 4A West League opener and deposited seven more scores down the stretch.

Jamison Johnson, Margaux Giordano, Ela Palmer and Charlie Smith each added two scores. Mary Jane Archibald added another.

The Mustangs nearly followed with a consecutive victory before losing 8-7 to Conifer, also in league.

Coming up: Two 4A West mathcups on the road at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood -- Tuesday, April 25, vs. Green Mountain, 7 p.m., and Thursday April 27, against Golden, 4 p.m.

Baseball

Thursday’s 6-5 victory in nonleague against visiting Bear Creek also came with base hits from eight different Mustangs, notably two by Ben Krza.

Jayden Salazar survived six innings for the victory; Andes Bertaud fanned three for the save.

Saturday’s game against Smoky Hill at Bill Swift Field was postponed and remains TBA, said head coach Phil Stanford.

Mullen is 7-6.

Girls Golf

The Mustangs have been able to employ more of a regular schedule despite recent weather conditions

The past Thursday’s third-place team showing was topped by Sammy Yates and Kaitlin Zinger – both shot 5-over-par 77 at Aurora Hills Golf Course.

Mullen dropped its first two 4A Foothills League games, 8-5 to Golden and 16-6 against Dakota Ridge.

As the Mustangs are still fighting for their first victory in 2023, Luke Desautels, Ethan Karr, Nicky Bond, Jeff Witwer and Brody Meade scored against Golden. Meade (thtee), Bond, Nate Jackson and Witwer tallied against Dakota Ridge.

Girls Soccer

Mullen suffered its first two losses of the season, both by shutout.

The Mustangs, who entered the past week ranked No. 1 in 4A, first lost 2-0 to Cherokee Trail, then 1-0 in overtime to Arapahoe, both in the Centennial League and both to 5A programs.

Mullen is 6-2-1 overall, 2-2 in league.

In wrapping up their Centennial schedule, the Mustangs showed well in a 96-84 dual meet at Arapahoe.

With firsts in 10 of the events, Mullen is moving toward state preparation.

Girls Tennis

The Mustangs’ schedule has been as demanding as any other spring-sports teams’ on campus, including have to borrow courts for all of its matches.

The past week, Mullen had four matches, including two in one day, suffered its first losses since opening day and had its streak of nine consecutive dual-meet victories snapped.

Still, after the Mustangs lost to Cherry Creek in the Centennial and to D’Evelyn, they are 10-3 in dual, 6-1 in the Centennial.

Coming up: 4A team bracket that will be released as early as Monday. Two rounds of the 16-team field will be played this week.

Track & Field

The strikingly cold and windy past Friday didn’t stop the Mustangs from taking eighth place in boys teams, ninth in girls and eighth combined in the Huskie Twilight Invitational at Echo Park Stadium in Parker.

Among a number of highlights, Jacob Sushinsky rolled to a 4-minute, 30.01-second 1,600 meters.
