A Legacy That Lives On: Mullen High School Dedicates Michael Marrese ’68 Atrium

by Patrick Motter, Director of Strategic Marketing & Communications
This past weekend, the Mullen High School community gathered to honor the life and legacy of the late Michael Marrese ’68 with the dedication of the Michael Marrese ’68 Atrium, the newly named entrance to our Sferra Memorial Resource Hall. The atrium stands at the heart of campus life, welcoming students, faculty, and visitors as they enter a space that connects numerous classrooms, the Student Life Center and our Academic and Personal Counseling offices. It is a place filled with movement, purpose, and possibility, making it a fitting tribute to a man whose life was defined by hard work, intellect, and service to others.

During the ceremony, members of the Marrese family joined the Mullen community for the unveiling of the new atrium signage. Michael’s siblings were present for the moment, surrounded by Marrese's fellow alumni from the classes of 1967, 1968, and 1969. Guests shared memories and friendships spoke to the lasting bonds formed at Mullen. As students pass through the Michael Marrese ’68 Atrium each day, they will be reminded of the enduring impact one graduate can have, not only through professional achievement, but through character, perseverance, and a commitment to learning.

Dr. Raul Cardenas, Jr., President and CEO of Mullen High School, reflected on that legacy, sharing, “We honor the life and legacy of Michael Marrese, Class of 1968, a devoted Catholic, a loyal son of Mullen High School, and a steadfast supporter of our mission. Michael cherished his time at Mullen and the lifelong bonds he formed with his classmates. His faith, generosity, and commitment to excellence exemplify what it means to be a Mullen graduate, and his legacy will continue to inspire our community for generations to come.” The dedication affirms Mullen’s mission to honor those who have paved the way and to inspire those who follow.

Dr. Michael Marrese’s journey began with humble determination. A 1968 Mullen graduate, he worked after school and throughout the summers to afford his education, never losing sight of his future. His acceptance to Princeton University set him on a path of academic excellence, earning degrees in Mathematics and Economics, a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, and a distinguished career spanning Northwestern University, the International Monetary Fund, and JP Morgan. Fluent in Hungarian and Russian, Michael embodied a global mindset rooted in scholarship and perseverance. It is this spirit of resilience, intellect, and purpose that now lives on in the Michael Marrese ’68 Atrium, a daily reminder to our students that dedication and education are powerful forces for success.

Mardi Gras, the Mullen Gala Story

by Natalie Paul '20, Alumni Advancement Coordinator
Understanding the history of Mullen High School and how that shaped who we are as a community is essential. Mullen High School has celebrated Mardi Gras for 65 years. “The history of Mardi Gras dates back thousands of years. As Christianity spread, it acted as a time for indulging in rich foods before Lent began on Ash Wednesday, marking the start of fasting” (History.com Editors, 2025). As Christianity expanded, larger Roman Catholic populations around the world embraced the celebration. Some of the most famous places for Mardi Gras include Brazil, Venice, and New Orleans, which draw in thousands of tourists for the festivities (History.com Editors, 2025).
