The sport for Colorado girls was first instituted in 1970 and officially sanctioned with team championships in 1975. It has turned into an exclusive club. Mullen, which added a girls team in the early 1990s, has won three state championships and stands fourth on the all-time list behind Cherry Creek (37), Cheyenne Mountain (23) and Kent Denver (five).
