Preseason Health and Safety Guide for Parents – Sports Medicine
Partnership, preparation, peace of mind.
Key Reminders for Parents
Ensure pre-participation exam (PPE) and registration forms are accurate and up to date.
Notify the Sports Medicine Team of any medical conditions.
Encourage your athlete to communicate early about any injuries or discomfort.
Role of Athletic Trainers
Our team of Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) provide prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation for injuries. We work closely with academic personnel and administration.
Communicate with parents regarding athletic injuries and plans of care. More significant injuries (potential fractures, concussions, etc.) will prompt earlier communication, usually the same day.
Team physicians oversee medical decisions and protocols for the department.
Directing Physician: Dr. Braden Mayer at UCHealth Steadman Hawkins Clinic – Denver.
Referral process for physician consultations, when necessary. Parents dictate the provider/office they take their child to; seeing our team physician is not necessary. We can help facilitate, if needed.
Emergency Action Plans
Venue-specific plans are coordinated with local emergency personnel and reviewed annually.
ATCs on campus for virtually all practices and home games, providing pre-hospital care to ensure your child has the best possible outcome in the event of an emergency.
Rehearsed with athletic staff and coaches annually. Parents are notified as soon as possible.
Injury Prevention
Sports Performance sessions led by experts are tailored to age and sport-specific demands. Workouts and educational presentations on hydration and nutrition strategies prepare your child with the foundation to perform their best while reducing risk for injury.
Policies in place with technology to support monitoring of environmental conditions, modifying activities during high-risk conditions such as extreme heat or cold, lightning, and hail.
Reporting and Management
All injuries and illnesses must be reported to our Sports Medicine Team as soon as possible.
Injury Documentation: If a physician restricts any participation in sport, written documentation from the doctor’s office must be delivered to sports medicine. This includes starting restrictions/limitations in participation, as well as removal of restrictions/clearance.
Concussion Protocol: Return-to-Sport (RTS) progression required for all athletes. This usually takes 5–7 days. Written clearance from a physician is a required component of this process.
