Mullen will have a rematch with Battle Mountain in the 4AQ semifinals; 'Stangs spanked the host Huskies 5-0 in their season opener.
AURORA -- In bidding for its first serious chance for a Colorado championship since its charter title in 2011, Mullen’s next step is Wednesday, Nov. 10, against Battle Mountain in the Class 4A semifinals.
It may sound familiar -- the Mustangs, now 16-1-1, actually opened their 2021 season at Battle Mountain in Edwards on Aug. 21, earning a 5-0 victory.
Now the No. 2 seed in the field, Mullen will meet the Huskies, seeded sixth, at Legacy Stadium.
The names have stayed the same. Eli Kerschen and Jack Sargent each scored twice against the Huskies, and Andrew DeBerardinis had one. As for assists, you know these names, too – Leo Aguilar, Jaycee Campos, Nolan Cooper and Kerschen.
To date, Kerschen has piled up 26 goals and 12 assists. DeBerardinis (16) Ethan Lehman (10), Sargent (eight) and Cooper (six) also have continued to score.
Overall, Mullen has outscored its opposition by an aggregate 85-7 and compiled 11 shutouts. In three postseason matches, the Mustangs have breezed by a combined 17-1.
They also have won 17 of their past 23 playoff games.
Concerning the Huskies, they are 12-5-1. They won the 4A/3A Western Slope League and have downed Glenwood Springs, Northridge and The Classical Academy in postseason rounds by a combined 9-1, and their seasonal scoring edge is 41-26.
Seniors Sam Koontz and Bryant Ramirez have combined for 21 goals.
The second semifinal is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. – (4) Denver North vs. (1) Northfield.
The winners will play for the championship on Friday, Nov. 12, at Switchbacks Weidner Field in Colorado Springs, first ball in play at 8 p.m.
