THIS WEEK IN MULLEN FOOTBALL

WEEK 4
: At Regis Jesuit Raiders

WHEN
: Friday, Sept. 20,  7 p.m.

WHERE

Class 5A nonleague

History:
The length, intensity and interest of the rivalry clearly make this Colorado’s top parochial gathering. It goes back to the middle of the past century, when they were known as “Parokes.”

More recently, in the 2010s, the Mustangs own a 5-4 edge, including the past 3-of-4.

Mullen is coming off a 35-0 whipping by Cherry Creek in its home opener. The Mustangs, in their first home shutout since the 2013 opener, were held to 130 yards and surrendered all five touchdowns through the air. ...

Five-of-the-six head-to-head meetings have resulted in a difference of no more than a touchdown and conversion. The exception was Mullen’s 17-0 victory in 2016. … Despite just 4 yards rushing the past week, Cearns remains Mullen’s leader in offense. He has 642 all-purpose yards, 329 rushing. The senior has five TDs. …

Heil tops Mullen by being in on 29 tackles. Keanaaina (25) and seniors Lorenzo Riley Combs and Vincent Difeo (20) are next. … Yee has balanced both positions, scoring 16 points as well as owning a 41.8 average in punts. …

The Raiders opened by taking down high-ender Pomona (23-13) before easily handling Overland (29-6) and Highlands Ranch (49-14). … Sophomore QB Nicco Marchiol is considered a budding star -- he’s 46-of-67 passing for 766 yards, five TDs and one interception. He also has rushed for 127 yards and three TDs. …

There will be one more week of nonleague for each team before Mullen heads to the Metro West League and Regis Jesuit takes on the South. … Before 2018’s 7-5 record, the Raiders had won at least nine games for five consecutive seasons, at least 10 in three of them.

Next up for Mullen
: It will be at Grandview on Friday, Sept. 27, 7 p.m., at Legacy Stadium in Aurora..

Coachspeak from Richardson

On last week’s whippin by Cherry Creek:

“First order of business, we did not take care of business offensively. We were lethargic, with a lot of mistakes by our younger guys. We really were not ready to play like I thought we would be.  We were a little confused on certain plays and (the Bruins) held the ball too long on us.”

On facing the Regis Jesuit Raiders:
“They have a solid quarterback,  he is a gamer, and they have some speedy receivers and are physical up front. On defense, they come at you with 11 to the ball and can regularly blitz you and force you to throw the ball. They want to stop the run. I know we’ll have our hands full.”

On being involved in the rivalry:
“It’s so cool being involved in some big rivalry games ... I’m excited to be a part of it and it’s an honor.”
