There is no truth to the rumor that Jerry Jeudy has high-school eligibility remaining and chosen to enroll at Mullen.
It was, however, a pretty good one.
“He could play for us, probably start,” first-year Mustangs head coach Jeremy Bennett said.
Seriously, late the past month, Jeudy, the highly touted wide receiver from Alabama and the No. 15 pick by the Denver Broncos in the NFL Draft, graced Mullen’s Brother Bernard Kinneavy Field at De La Salle Stadium with route-running and pass-catching as well as the speed not usually seen on a schoolboy field.
He was being filmed by Mandalay Sports Media, which rented the stadium, to not only improve his rating in the Madden game, but for a new series to debut in September, “Underrated.” It will be streamed on YouTube and Bleacher Report.
Amid cameras, a drone, lights and dummy defenders, Jeudy ran a series of routes on a hot, sunny 90-degree afternoon. Pleasant and amicable, Jeudy said he’s embracing his early days as an NFL player and a Coloradan, and is intent on improving and becoming a household name in the Rocky Mountains.
Plus, performing for cameras never seems to be a chore for a wide-eyed, humble 21-year-old used to attention.
“Yeah, I enjoyed being out here,” Jeudy said. “I’m out here trying to improve and get better.”
He also noted Mullen’s facilities were of the higher end, ”very nice,” he said. “My first two years (as a schoolboy), we had to use another school’s facilities.”
Jeudy was a Deerfield Beach High Buck in Florida, a five-star recruit as a senior with 76 receptions for 1,054 yards and 15 touchdowns, before heading to the Crimson Tide and winning the Fred Biletnikoff Award as a sophomore as the nation’s best. He also was a consensus All-American.
“He had a great time, gave a full effort and probably ran, like, 20 routes for us,” said Jonathan Vogel, a Mandalay producer. “It was great.”
