9-3 Roundup

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Warren's big play helps football win; softball loses to Falcon; solid cross-country effort in Littleton; boys soccer moves to 4-0; volleyball wins in Day 1 in Glenwood tourney.

No, Connor Warren had never scored a touchdown as a defender.
But, yes, his first will remain memorable.
The active, stout linebacker grabbed a deflection off a bad snap on Friday night and returned it for the winning score as Mullen finally got past Legend 25-21 in Class 5A nonleague at Brother Bernard Kinneavy Field at De La Salle Stadium.
Both the Mustangs and Legend have leveled their records at 1-1.
Afterward, Warren seemed to float off the field while marveling at his good fortune.
“I was in a 2-point stance, so I could see it well,” he said of the play. “I just followed it and no one blocked me. I got a good bounce and just took it and ran.”
The Mustangs had gotten within 21-18 of the Titans on a 30-yard touchdown reception by Owen Hearty from Blake Palladino and the two hooked up again on the 2-point conversion with 8:35 to play.
However, the Titans were making another move and got inside Mullen territory. Warren said the Mustangs were expecting a bad snap or two as the Titans had moved some inside personnel up front;
And they got it at just the right time.
“That was a rough drive for us, exactly what we needed,” Warren said. “We couldn’t give up the lead.”
When the snap was bobbled and tipped into the air, Warren corralled it and scored untouched.
“I was more worried about being caught than anything,” he said. “I was terrified.”
Twice Mullen had short receptions turn into lost fumbles and both led directly to scores, one that was returned for a TD in the third quarter.
But Mullen scored the game’s final 18 points, including Bryce Sohayda’s 30-yard field goal.
Earlier, Kyle Krebs opened the Mustangs’ scoring with a wide-open, 52-yard catch-and-run from Palladino.
And late, after Mullen had earned a fumble recovery and a chance to run out the clock in the final minutes, the Mustangs inadvertently fumbled it back to the Titans a couple of plays later.
Michael Brouillette snared an overthrown Titans pass deep inside Mustangs territory with 1:10 remaining to seal it.
“Thank God,” Warren said.
