The rough stretch for Mullen girls continued on Saturday.
The Mustangs were blown out 70-37 by Grandview in the Centennial League at Hutchison Fieldhouse.
Since beating the Wolves on Jan. 5, a victory that halted a 22-game losing streak to their Class 5A counterparts, the 4A Mustangs, in the face of high-end competition, are 3-4. Mullen now stands 11-6 overall, 3-3 in league.
It also was the worst defeat for Mullen, three-time-defending Colorado champion, since a 70-25 loss to the Wolves in January 2019.
“We’re not as focused as we should be,” Mullen head coach Frank Cawley said.
The Mustangs trailed only 19-13 after 8 minutes, but the wheels came off quickly -- they trailed 42-23 at halftime and were outscored 42-16 over the middle quarters.
Once again, the Mustangs’ Imani Perez had another strong game, including a team-high 16 points
However, other help wasn’t forthcoming.
“(The Wolves) went on a little run there and that was it,” Cawley said of Grandview, now 7-9, 4-1.
“We need to learn how to get better after this kind of experience.”
Before tip-off, Mustangs senior Gracie Gallegos was cited for scoring her 1,000th career point in the previous game at Arapahoe,
