Baseball wins in Pueblo; track and field hosts its 24th Invitational; girls lacrosse falls to rival.

Mullen baseball road into perhaps the best high-school sports town in Colorado and left with a victory.

The Mustangs beat Pueblo West 8-4 on Saturday in big-school nonleague. Ranked No. 8 in Class 5A, they moved to 8-2.

“It’s a really nice ‘W’ to come down here and get,” head coach Phil Stanford said. “(The Cyclones) are a solid team.”

Offensively, senior Henry Stewart had a three-run home run in a six-run third inning. He also had a double.

“Henry hit the ball real well, working gap-to-gap,” Stanford said.

Trevor More was 2-for-2 to bring his average to a scorching .756. On an eight-game hitting streak, he added two runs batted in and a run scored. Andrew Brady had two hits (a double and a triple) and scored twice and Ryan Brady added two hits and an RBI. Freshman Thomas Stewart upped his team-leading RBI total to 13 with two more along with his two hits.

All told, Mullen had 13 hits, seven for extra bases.

On the mound, Henry Shellhorn went the first three innings and was touched for four runs in the third before Moore came on to throw four scoreless innings with three hits and six strikeouts.

Next for Mullen is a return to the Centennial League with a home matchup at Bill Swift Field against Cherry Creek, first pitch at 4:15 p.m. The two programs shared the league title the past season.
