Jeff Lepley to head boys tennis

Mullen’s boys tennis won’t have its new head coach coming in cold.

No, Jeff Lepley doesn’t need an introduction – he assisted with Mustangs boys the past fall and currently is assisting Jera Sturgell with the girls this spring.

Consider the familiarity a plus.

“It should be a lot of fun,” Lepley said.

A management consultant from Raleigh, N.C., Lepley has played and coached on multiple levels on the sport.

He was a top-ranked junior in North Carolina over multiple age groups and competed nationally.

At Raleigh’s Cardinal Gibbons High School, he was the program’s top singles and doubles player (the state permits players to compete in both) and fared well within a loaded conference.

And at Swanee: The College of the South, he also was the Division III school’s top singles and doubles player and graduated with degrees in environmental policy and business.

Lepley also coached at a country club, giving lessons and clinics from youth to adults.

“We’re excited to have him be a part of our boys program and the girls program,” Mustangs interim associate athletic director Joey Mahmood said. ”He’s a great coach and a great person and I think he’ll be a real leader for our program.”

Lepley said he’s happy to be working with the girls, who are defending Class 4A champions, and looks forward to heading the boys, who were runners-up in 2020.

“I think we can make a play (for a state title) with the boys and it’s always exciting,” Lepley said. “We’ve got some seniors who are committed and it’s nice to have them back.”:
