'Stangs continue golf prowess

Kaitlin Zingler leads the way with a 2-under-par 69; 3 sophs provide backing to garner team title in 4A Region 4; Mullen has won the past 4 medalists and last 3 team titles.

Mullen girls golf remains consistently high-end among Colorado ranks.

The Mustangs turned in their fourth consecutive regional medalist and third straight team championship on Monday, when they dominated Class 4A Region 4 at Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction.

‘Kaitlin Zingler shot 2-under-par 69 to head the individual field and the Mustangs displayed emerging depth in leading the team chase.

A University of Denver signee, Zingler, one of the top players regardless of Colorado’s three classifications, began the par-71, 5,551-yard layout by shooting even-par 35 on the front nine and made three of her four birdies on the back side for a 34. She did not make a double bogey and won by a whopping five shots.

Perhaps the bigger news was Zingler enjoying lots of backing as Jane Gray (85) was 13th, Sammy Yates (89) 14th and Riley Sullivan (90) tied for 15th. All are sophomores.

Head coach Kate Walker said she was thrilled with the overall showing.

“Absolutely,” she said. “Hopefully, it’s sinking in how well they did. Obviously, regionals are a super-stressful event and the whloe season boils down to one round. And I know they were feeling the pressure of repeating as regional champions, so, quite honestly, we played a practice round and we were kind of dragging. It was hot, it was humid, they didn’t play well and they didn’t practice well.

“We had a lot of cancelled practices this year, there’s the stress of the end of the school year, Kaitlin graduated (Sunday) and didn’t get to Grand Junction until almost midnight, our girls have finals (Tuesday) … the fact that they pulled this off and posted good scores with all of these distractions is great. I’m really pleased with their performances.”

Mullen outdistanced runner-up Durango 243-246.

Next are the 4A Championships May 30-31 at Thorncreek G.C. in Thornton. Walker she hopes her girls can get in two practice rounds before the upcoming holiday weekend.

It will be the final event of the 2022-23 season.
