Spring '19: New, familiar faces dot roster

Academy players return with veterans and younbger talent to make Mustangs hopeful about new season.
As Mullen girls soccer begins its season, there is a fair amount of give and take.

The Mustangs will give away some talent, as in six seniors will have to be replaced, but they also take back a number of returnees in addition to a couple of academy players joining the roster as well as a senior transfer.

Macy Clem and Jaime DeBerardinis from the academy circuit, and Pennsylvania move-in Maddie DeNezza account for some of the new faces.

Others are very promising freshmen Lauren Creighton and Katy DeNezza.

Kayla Wanna, Shelby Colbert. Makena Guthrie, Jade Garcia and Anna Seaman (a team-leading five goals in 2018) are among the prominent mainstays and returnees.

“It’s a combination of players who have been with the program and newcomers,” fifth-year head coach Matthew Guglielmo said. “The outlook is good.”

The Class 4A Mustangs were 6-7-4 overall a year ago, 2-4-1 in the 5A-based Centennial League. They will open their season on Tuesday, March 12, at SkyView Academy in Highlands Ranch. The home opener will be Thursday, March 14, against St. Mary’s Academy.

“I think we can be a lot better,” Guglielmo said. “We were fortunate to squeak into the tournament (last year) and this year I think we look totally different.”
