Hungry Wolvesdevour Mustangs by 45

No answers against big-school champs.
AURORA -- It may have been over when Mullen arrived as these are the kinds of games that occur for the two-time defending Class 5A champions at Grandview.
For the record, the final score was 70-25 on Wednesday night in favor of the Wolves over the Mustangs, a one-sided Centennial League encounter that isn’t something new for the reigning big-school power.
And the Mustangs couldn’t – and didn’t – hang their heads. Now 11-3 overall and 5-0 in the loop, Grandview has had a tremendous run since the start of the 2011-12. The Wolves have an aggregate overall mark of 176-25 during the span as well as a 98-5 league record, including a Centennial winning streak of 53 games and six league championships.
“(The Wolves) played extremely well,” Mustangs head coach Frank Cawley said. “And what I told them at halftime was to not hang their heads because there will be a lot of teams down 30 points to them at halftime.”
Actually, the Mustangs, who dipped to 8-6, 3-2, were only down by 27 points (36-9), but it was simply part of the blowout. Grandview also led 26-2 after a quarter and held a 48-7 bulge when combining the first and fourth quarters.
Cawley and his team knew what they were up against as Grandview has tremendous height and size – the Wolves have players listed at 6-foot-7, 6-4 and 6-2. It’s probably why Mullen had only one rebound in the first quarter.
“We worked on it and all of our kids did their best to get around them, but they’re just that big,” Cawley said.
Plus, the Mustangs had turnover problems and made only one of their first 11 shots.
Junior point guard Megan Pohs led Mullen with seven points.
“We tried dribble penetration against them and you can’t do that,” Cawley said. ’”They’re good on defense. We had a lot of looks, but all of a sudden here comes a hand …”
In the middle quarters, the scoring difference was only 22-18 and the Mustangs didn’t appear deflated. They will be back at it on Friday, 5:30 p.m., also in Aurora and against Smoky Hill.
“What we’re taking from this is we had great energy and we didn’t get down,” Cawley said. “We’re not as disappointed by getting beaten by that much, but we have a lot to learn and we’ll be ready for Friday.
“We came together as a team and I got to see some things from different kids. We’re going to make the best of it.”
