Season ends at Mountain Vista ... again

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Golden Eagles too powerful.
It had a familiar ring to it. Mullen’s baseball season ended in a loss to Mountain Vista just as it did in 2018.
The Mustangs fell 12-1 in five innings on Saturday to the Highlands Ranch-based Golden Eagles and defending Class 5A champions in the first round of regionals. They gave up 10 runs in the fourth and fifth.
Mullen ended 13-11 under first-year head coach Nick Arcuri, its third in three years.
Alek Elges came home on Evan Malloy’s double in the first and that was it for Mustangs scoring. Mountain Vista grabbed the lead at 2-1 in the bottom half and stayed quiet until the fourth.
Senior Clay Burke earned the pitching decision. He transferred from Mullen after his sophomore season and is the son of former Cherry Creek star pitcher John Burke, who was the first amateur draft pick of the Colorado Rockies. The younger Burke allowed only three hits, struck out four and walked two.
Left-hander Will Miller took the loss for Mullen.
Stephan Loya and Michael Stanford had Mullen’s other hits.
Mountain Vista moved to 23-2 after beating Dakota Rudge 20-2 in a second game on Saturday. It has qualified for the Champion Series.
Mullen loses 10 seniors for 2020.
Elges ended as the Mustangs’ leading hitter at .394. Malloy was next at .386 and had 14 doubles.
