Miller mows down Buffs

'Stangs win 3-1.
It was a time for Will Miller to have his best game of the season and he delivered.

The Mullen senior pitched a gem on Thursday, leading the Mustangs to a 3-1 road victory at Smoky Hill in Aurora in the Centennial League. Bound for Cornell College, the left-hander went the distance in striking out 12 Buffaloes, walking just one and permitting three hits.

“My curveball all day,” Miller replied when asked what was working for him. “I threw it on any count. I had a lot of first-pitch curveballs and probably threw it 50-50 with my fastball. It was moving like there was no tomorrow and I had control of it.”

Control is good for the Mustangs, who improved to 10-7 overall, 4-5 in league, and were coming off a 17-2 whipping the past Saturday at home against Grandview, one that caused the Mustangs to take a look at themselves.

“We needed a win,” Miller said of his performance. “Our morale and confidence are back up. Guys are playing much looser and we’re actually playing
our game now.”

All told, Miller threw 107 pitches and was around the plate all game. Offensively, Brennen Nolte had a double and two runs batted in. Alek Elges and Evan Malloy had singles. Malloy also walked twice. Jack Vitry, Malloy and Stephan Loya scored.

The Mustangs, who also had their scrimmage game at Coors Field on Wednesday, will have a make-up game at Grandview in Aurora on Friday, first pitch at 4:15 p.m., and a rematch with Smoky Hill at Bill Swift Field on Saturday, 11 a.m.
