As she has done all season, freshman Sofia Choi led Mullen girls golf.

On Monday and in her first postseason event, Choi fired a 4-over-par 76 at Adobe Creek National Golf Course to win the Class 4A Region 3.

Having won three earlier tournaments in 2019, including two in the 5A Centennial League, Choi parred the front side before coming home in 40. She won by two shots over Golden’s Jessica Morrissey, another freshman.

“Sofia played really consistent today,” Mustangs head coach Ashley Tait said. “She felt she should have shot under par, but a couple of pulled drives cost her.”

Golden won the team chase at 28-over and Durango was second at plus-40 to account for the two automatic team qualifiers, and Mullen tied with Evergreen at 44-over to take third, but the Mustangs flirted with advancing three for a team.

Mustangs junior Paige Sowitch shot 89 to qualify and sophomore Elle Deorio scored 96 before losing on the second playoff hole to advance.

However, she will be first alternate.

“So we have two in and a first alternate, so fingers crossed (Elle) gets in and we can play as a team,” Tait said.

The 4A state tournament, which also will include Holy Family’s Hailey Schalk, the two-time 3A champion who has moved up, will be May 20-21 at Pelican Lakes G.C. in Windsor.
