Mullen is fresh from a 30-21 loss in Aurora at parochial-rival Regis Jesuit, a late decision that stung a bit. … The Mustangs lost a 21-14 halftime lead, were scoreless in the second half and had 24 less snaps (77-53). …
The Mustangs will be looking to convert on third down -- they were 1-of-12 last week, 8 percent. … Cearns added another long touchdown run, a 75-yarder. In 2019, he also has a 75-yard rush for a score and TD catches of 85 and 84 yards. … Marcoux had a big-boy grab for a reception that he turned into a 55-yard score. … The Mullen defense battled, but still surrendered 377 yards, generated no turnovers and was hurt by penalties. …
Wolves RB Noah Schmidt, a junior, has 756 yards, tops in 5A. … After a month of play, Grandview is one of 10 teams undefeated. … The Wolves are third (182 points) in big-school scoring and sixth (52) in prevention. … When considering Grandview’s reputation on defense, the Wolves have caused an unusually low (for them) four turnovers. …
Cearns is averaging 200.5 all-purpose yards (including returns). And of the top 13 in 5A total yards (rushing, passing, receiving), 11 are quarterbacks, Schmidt is seventh (199.5) and Cearns 13th (172.5). … As well, Schmidt is second (66) in big-school scoring and Cearns 10th (36). … Keanaaina, headed to Notre Dame on Saturday, is tops in Mullen tackles (36).
Next up for Mullen: It will host Columbine, virtually everyone’s top team, on Friday, Oct. 4, 7 p.m., Brother Bernard Kinneavy Field at De La Salle Stadium, the Metro West League opener.
Coachspeak from Richardson
On last week’s defeat at Regis Jesuit:
“Overall, I think the guys played very hard and fought, and played hard to the end. We did a very good job of scoring in the first half; on the flip side, we didn’t do a very good job of moving the ball in the second half ... we just didn’t finish.”
On facing the Grandview Wolves:
“They’re well-coached, solid and sustain it year in, year out. They have some elite athletes who know their system. They have dominated to this point.”
On wrapping up nonleague play:
“I’ll be really excited if we get a victory and end up 3-2 to set the stage to go into conference play.”
