Notable
: This will be Mullen’s 864th game since first playing in 1936 in the old Parochial League. The Mustangs are 587-258-18 in their history. ...

Mullen is coming off a 42-12 setback to Grandview that wrapped up its nonleague season. The Mustangs had a chance to turn the momentum early in the third quarter before it got away. … Four of the Mustangs’ first five games were on the road; hence, four of their final five will be at home. …

Kaleb Valdez-Lemos, a freshman, got the start last week at QB. He was constantly pressured by
the Grandview front and ended 8-of-23 for 96 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. … Ben Marcoux had the scoring catch, once again a high-end grab that he also turned into a catch-and-run. …

Defensively, Mullen was hit for 303 yards on the ground, including a 94-yarder for a TD by 5A’s top rusher, Noah Schmidt. … Otherwise, the defense had a lot of moments, mostly by Keanaaina, Kirking and Jonah Villaneuba. … Notre Dame Rivals will be represented at the game. Keanaaina will sign with the Fightin’ Irish in December. …

Columbine remains, well, Columbine with 1,467 yards rushing to 456 passing. … The Rebels are topped by senior RB Tanner Hollens, who has compiled 691 yards rushing, four games of more-than-100 rushing and 11 TDs. … If you like line play, you may be in for a treat -- Mullen has the very active Keanaaina and the Rebels sport offensive tackle Andrew Gentry (6-8, 310), who has committed to BYU. May they square off regularly. …

The Rebels rank first in 5A scoring defense (31 points permitted) and Mullen is 16th in scoring offense (111).

Next up for Mullen
: It will host Arvada’s Ralston Valley on Friday, Oct. 11, 7 p.m., in League Game No. 2.

Coachspeak from Richardson

On his team at midseason:
“Every week we do good things. We just have to do things consistently. (Last week) we had one or two guys not doing their jobs. It cost us. We’re working hard to correct it.”

On his team not getting discouraged:: “After Grandview, I thought I lost the guys, but after they thanked the fans, they  jogged over like they were ready for the next order. It meant a lot. We’ve had the best week of practice we’ve had and I’m excited about it.”

On facing the Rebels:
“Outside of them being No. 1, they are well-coached, very disciplined, they play hard and battle every week … everything is predicated on their power-run game … they don’t change.”
