Cross country set for postseason racing

Mustangs headed to Grand Junction on Thursday with high aspirations.

The time is now for Mullen cross country.

Class 4A Region 1 will be held Thursday, Oct. 17, at Lincoln Park Golf Course in Grand Junction with boys championships at 5 p.m. and girls at 5:30.

Shut out of the state meet a year ago, the Mustangs, overwhelmed a bit by mountain runners on a mountain course, recently ran a race over Lincoln Park, fared well and proclaimed themselves
ready.

Still, they know running substantial times will be a must across the broad.

“No doubt about it,” head coach Joe Welling said, “we’ll have to throw down great times on Thursday to compete with a very deep and talented region.”

Mullen’s best bets in boys are junior Michael Dudzic, the team’s leading runner all season, senior Will Locascio and sophomore Jack Tolbert. In girls, freshman Amy O’Connell has been at the front from the first race.

“Our entire boys team and Amy look to get through to state,” Welling said, “but we’re hoping that all 18 runners post their fastest times of the season.”

Mullen’s boys lineup: Mason Atwell; Dudzic; Jonathan Egan; Gunnar Holmes; Locascio; Owen McCarter; Aidan Schwarz; Diego Taboada-Cross; and Tolbert. Alternate: Nate Hoody.

Mullen’s girls lineup: Lizzie Blaschke; Octavia Gomez; Emma Hehn; Caty Meisner; Alicia Muller; O’Connell; Megan Sandy; Kaitlin Stanford; Madison Wainscoat. Alternate: Emily DeLine. Manager: Lucy Kohara.
