'Stangs' slide reaches an unlucky 7

Mullen falls 82-60 on the road to Cherokee Trail.

AURORA – It’s a skid that won’t go away.

Mullen’s losing streak reached seven on Wednesday night. The Mustangs faded late in an 82-60 road whipping in the Centennial League.

In dropping to 3-10 overall and 0-5 in league, additional indignities included being outscored 49-31 in the second half and permitting single-game Cougars’ marks in individual 3-pointers made and scoring.

“We didn’t execute,” Mustangs head coach Bob Caton said. “We have to learn how to do that, and learn how to put in a game plan and implement it.”

Cherokee Trail (3-11 overall) also got its first league victory of the season in five attempts.

Once again, Mullen was in it early, trailing only 33-29 at half. However, the wheels came off in the usual manner – a series of turnovers among assorted other miscues such as poor shooting and defense turned it into a rout.

In addition, Mullen couldn’t handle the Cougars’ Tre Titus, had went for 38 points and seven 3-pointers – four in the decisive third quarter – that turned into program standards.

“It’s discouraging to go out and work on the same things and get these results,” Caton said.

Brayden Carter (17 points), Ethan Heffern (15) and Josh Lopez (11) headed Mullen scoring.

Next for the Mustangs will be another league game in Aurora, Friday at Overland.

“They’re very good,” Caton said of the Trailblazers. “They play hellacious defense and they’re quick.”
