Sumner leads Mullen at Westy

Senior wins at 152; Mustangs 6th as a team with 4 placers.
 
WESTMINSTER -- John Sumner won an individual crown and Mullen finished sixth as a team on Saturday at the Westminster Invitational.

Sumner, a senior, won at 152 pounds in heading Mullen’s four placers.

In the team chase, the Mustangs totaled 81 points to trail winner Cherokee Trail (270), Adams City (151), Roosevelt (142), Broomfield (139) and Sand Creek (112.5).

Individually, Sumner, now 36-3, received a first-round bye before winning three matches by fall and taking the title via forfeit over Cherokee Trail’s Brock Labonde.

Freshman Kaleb Valdez-Lemos improved to 25-9 with a third-place finish at 145. He downed Mauricio Gonzales of Aurora Central 8-1 in the consolation final.

At 160, Cole Nading took fourth. The senior lost the consolation bout 5-2 to Aaron Allee of Thornton. Nading is 23-9.

And sophomore Mark Troni was fifth at 132, downing Ethan Debelek of Cherokee Trail. Troni is 30-12.

Next for Mullen are varsity dual matches at Chatfield on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 7 p.m.
