Sowitch, Macauley grab Centennial firsts

Mustangs win twice in shortened league meet.

Behind two first-place finishes, Mullen was sixth of eight teams in the heavily talented Centennial League Championships on Saturday held at Arapahoe High School.

Despite being down some key swimmers and going against a lot of depth that should keep the league’s upper echelon in the mix to grab a Class 5A state championship next weekend, the 4A Mustangs showed well in a meet that was shortened to one session after the recent snowstorm.

Lindsey Sowitch and Mary Macauley each won races. Sowitch, a junior, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 56.30 seconds. And Macauley, a freshman, won the 100 backstroke in 57.20.

Topping the Mustangs’ other individual finishes of note was Sowitch, who was third in the 100 butterfly, 59.34. Concerning relays, Macauley, Anarose Schwamm, Sowitch and Gabrielle Zinis were third in the 200 individual medley (1:50.12) and Zinis, Macauley, Sowitch and Claire Mochan were fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:40.81).

Mullen awaits its opportunity in the 4A Colorado championships from Feb. 18-19 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton.
