Seniors grab 2nd and 3rd, respectively, Mustangs move to runner-up as a team in Centennial League Match No. 2.

CENTENNIAL – It was another strong showing for Mullen boys golf, including improvement.
The Mustangs, who placed third as a team the past week in the first Centennial League tournament of the season, bumped up a spot as a team on Monday and added two of the top three individual spots.

Competing at South Suburban Golf Course, the Mustangs grabbed second place and had Mario Dino take second and Rhett Johnson third.

Both seniors, Dino fired a 2-under-par 70 and Johnson turned in an even-par 72.

Dino went 45-35 with two birdies and a bogey on each side. He finished two strokes behind Arapahoe’s Matthew Wilkinson, a junior who cruised to a tidy 4-under, 34-34--68.

Johnson, who shot 1-over 71 the past week at Meadow Hills G.C. in Aurora, was consistent. He parred 16 of his first 17 holes, including the first 13, birdied the 587-yard par-5 No. 14, and missed red numbers by bogeying the 396-yard, par-4 18th. He tied for third with Cherry Creek’s Charlie Flaxbeard, who was second in the past week’s league meet.

Mullen freshman Ryan Brady tied for 12th at 5-over 77, senior Thomas O’Sullivan was 15th at 79 and junior Andrew Brady tied for 18th at 80.

Arapahoe took the team chase at 291, seven strokes better than Mullen. Cherry Creek, which won the first league meet, was two back of the Mustangs at an even 300.

The Mustangs will be idle for 10 days. Next is the third league meet with the Mustangs as hosts, Aug. 27, at Foothills G.C., beginning at noon.
