George Henry Hanzel

High-school sport: Tennis, No. 2 singles.

What I’ve done lately:
Won Class 4A No. 2 singles championship the past Saturday in Pueblo. For his career, he didn’t qualify for state as a freshman, was eliminated in the first round as a sophomore (No. 1 singles in both seasons) and was second at 4A No. 2 singles in 2019. Was 13-1 in 2020, undefeated in 4A.

Grade-point average:
3.72.

Class:
Senior.

Why I attend Mullen:
I think it’s because of the people. I knew a few people going into Mullen, not a ton, but once I did I knew I made the right decision. It’s a good school and community, and everybody looks out for each other.

The best thing about my sport:
I think the best thing about tennis is even though we play our own separate matches, all of our kids work together to win against other schools and at state and regionals.

In my future:
I haven’t done a lot of applying to colleges, I’m starting essays and studying for the ACT again. I’m looking more toward bigger schools near the mountains.

Pre-Game ritual:
I have a few superstitions … sometimes I wear a lucky shirt or something before a match or listen to the same music on the way there.

Favorite college team:
Kansas men’s basketball.

Why I play:
Because it’s being out there on the court one-on-one, it creates mental toughness and it’s an accomplishment. It’s not just a physical sport; it’s a mental sport, too.
