Gabrielle Zinis, Student-Athlete of the Week

High-school sport: Swimming (sprinter, 50- and 100-yard freestyles, and member of 200 and 400 freestyle relays).
What I’ve done lately: Two-time Class 4A state champion in relays; fifth in 50 freestyle; eighth in 100 freestyle; working to position Mustangs for another team run at a state title.
Grade-point average: 3.92.
Class: Senior.
Why I attend Mullen: My older sister (Sofia) and Dad (Yani) went here, it’s a family thing. When I shadowed here, it really gave me a sense of community and I liked the positive environment I felt when I was here.
The best thing about my sport: I’d say the combination of it being an individual and team sport.
In my future: I’ll be swimming at San Diego, it’s Division I and I’m excited for that; considering marine biology as a major.
Pre-Meet ritual: I do a little bit – I do the same warmup before I swim and then the biggest thing for big meets is I just kind of roll out and listen to some music, and talk to my teammates and coach before I actually swim. They help to calm me down.
Favorite college team: No favorite.
Why I swim: It definitely has a lot of physical benefits and it’s just kind of a place, the pool, where I take out all my stress. Whatever happened that day I can put it aside. And it allows me to show my abilities and be part of some really great teams.
