Senior guard, who wants to become a nurse, signs with NAIA Chargers

It became official for Elaina Martinez prior to the beginning of the playoffs.

She signed with Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa, an NAIA school.

“I really wanted to go there after I visited and I really liked the coaches,” Martinez said minutes after she and her teammates won another Class 4A championship. “I want to go into nursing and the program is really good there.”

The Chargers will be getting a two-way guard who can handle the point as well as the shooting position. Martinez handled an assortment of roles for the Mustangs, starter to coming off the bench, running the point to spotting up on the perimeter, and defender to getting out on the break.

In 73 career games for the Mustangs, she averaged a modest 5.6 points, but was durable, displayed shooting range, made 73 percent of her free throws and fit nicely into the Mustangs’ team approach.

“She can play there,” Mustangs head coach Frank Cawley said. “It’s a good place for her.”

Said Martinez: “I really liked it there. I just loved the atmosphere. It’s a smaller school and I’ve gone to one my whole life.”
