'Stangs make it a regional sweep

Mullen looks strong in its 4A regional with 4 first places and 3 runners-up; also wins challenge match at No. 3 singles for a full set of 7 lines playing for individual titles.

The Mullen contingent headed to Pueblo for the new individual portion of the Class 4A Colorado tournament is complete.

On Thursday at Pinehurst Country Club in a 4A regional, the Mustangs turned in four first places and three runners-up. One of the second places will compete today in a playback.

“It was a long day at Pinehurst,” first-year Mullen head coach Jeff Lepley said, “but the ‘Stangs are stomping their way to Pueblo.”

No. 2 singles Patrick Duke; No. 1 doubles Colin Mackenzie-Nicholas Ruegsegger, No. 2 doubles Aiden Guthrie-John Lenich and No. 4 doubles Luke Denezza-Liam Cook won their lines; No. 1 singles Jack Barker, No. 3 singles Carson Duke and No. 2 doubles Josh Wanja-Jackson Alexander finished second.

And on Friday, Carson Duke won his challenge match to confirm the clean sweep for the Mustangs.

“It was great to see everyone’s motivation and drive to make it to state,” Lepley said.

The past week, Mullen participated in the new 16-team playoff bracket to determine a team champion. The switch involves dual meets head-to-head. The Mustangs won their preliminary-round match at home against Peak to Peak and dropped their quarterfinal match at Colorado Academy.

Next weekend, instead of deciding the team and line championships at once, individual champions at the three singles and four doubles spots will be determined, Oct. 13-15 at Pueblo City Park, brackets of 16 at each line.
