Kristen Russell named Girls Lacrosse Head Coach

Former prep and collegiate player takes over Mustangs girls lacrosse.
Of course, everyone was affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and Kristen Russell was no different.

As a senior at James Madison, she lost most of her season and it was particularly annoying – two years earlier, the Bulldogs were defending NCAA Division I Champions.

However, the pandemic eventually gave Russell the opportunity to work remotely and choose where she wanted to live.

So she followed friends who selected Denver and landed the head-coach position for Mustangs girls lacrosse, a delightful turn of events for the native of Olney, MD.

“I’m so excited,” Russell said.

A decorated defender at Sherwood High School in Sandy Spring, Md., as well as with James Madison, Russell is in the infancy of her coaching career, having worked some clinics, summer camps, clubs and at National Cathedral H.S. in Washington, D.C.

An electrical engineer for utilities, Russell said “We have a great opportunity here to grow, build, and get some wins, while competing in the 4A classification and in a new league.”

Mullen Athletic Director, Melynda Brown, speaks of the newest addition to Mullen Athletics, ”Coach Russell comes to Mullen with the excitement, energy and enthusiasm that the girls lacrosse program needs. With her playing and coaching experience at a prestigious school like Cathedral in D.C., she comes with a lacrosse insight that we have not had in this program before.  We are lucky to have her and are expecting great things in the years to come!”
