ATHLETIC WEEKLY ROUNDUP
FEBRUARY 5 - FEBRUARY 10
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL 
  • The Mullen girls’ basketball team defeated Eaglecrest 39-20 on Wednesday to finish the League’s regular season at 5-2 and in 3rd-place in the standings.  Next up for these Mustangs is the Centennial League Challenge post-league tournament where they will play Eaglecrest in game one.  Currently, the team is ranked 9th in the 6A rankings.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL 
  • On 2/5 the Mustangs fell to Denver South 68-54 in a late-season non-conference matchup.  Their road didn’t get any easier as they took on the league leading Eaglecrest Raptors two days later. However, the Mustangs rolled in and out pace the Raptors 60-47. The ‘Stangs ended the week on the road with a 71-45 loss to the Smoky Hill Buffaloes. They finished 3-5 in Centennial League play as they headed into the post-conference Centennial League Challenge Tournament.  In their first game of the tournament, the Mustangs fell to Smoky Hill 71-45.  They host Cherokee Trail in game two of the tournament on Tuesday night.
HOCKEY 
  • On 2/9 the Mullen Hockey team traveled to Vail to take on  Battle Mountain. The Mustangs fell to the Huskies 4-1. Their next two games will be at the University of Denver where they take on Colorado Academy on Tuesday and Kent Denver on Thursday.
GIRLS’ SWIM AND DIVE 
  • The Mullen girls’ Swim and Dive Team finished with an 8th-Place finish at the CHSAA 4A State Swim & Dive Championships.  The Mullen Mustangs had a strong showing in the Women's 200 Yard Medley Relay at the state championships last week, finishing 11th overall. The team, anchored by Stella Zinis' leg (25.49), clocked in at 1:57.55. Lang Davison led the charge with a split of (28.87), setting the tone for the relay. Brigid Anderson delivered a solid second leg (34.52), and Sahara Zurita brought it home with a strong third leg with a time of (28.67). In the Womens’ 50 yard Freestyle, Mullen’s Natalie Bradac finished 7th with a time of (24.91).  In the Womens’ 100 yard Butterfly, Lang Davidson came in 9th with a time of (1:02.86). Mullen's Sally Kohara put in a valiant effort in the Women's 500 Yard Freestyle finishing 19th overall. Kohara kicked off the race with a strong first leg, clocking in at (29.01) seconds. She maintained a steady pace throughout the grueling distance event.Her splits included a solid (34.76) in the anchor which pushed her to a final time of (5:37.68).  In the 200 yard Freestyle Relay, Shannon McCarthy (26.20), Annie Kozlevchar (52.48), Stella Zinis (26.02), and Natalie Bradac (24.62) combined for a time of 1:43.12 and a 5th place finish. Next in the Women’s 100 yard Backstroke, Lang Davison took 13th with a time of (1:02.57). In the 100 yard breaststroke, Natalie Bradac finished in 3rd place with a time of 1:07.56. In the final event, the Mullen's swimmers finished in 10th place in the 400 yard Freestyle Relay. Sally Kohara led the charge with a strong opening leg (28.00), followed by Lang Davison (59.08), Annie Kozlevchar (1:26.36), and Natalie Bradac anchoring the team home in (3:49.06), her split was (55.33).
WRESTLING
  • On the strength of seven 1st-place finishes, Mullen’s boys’ wrestlers out paced the field and finished their Regional in 1st-Place with a score 234.0 which was nine better than Severance’s 2nd-Place finish at 225.0.  Mullen’s 1st-place finishers were Antonio Herrera at 113 lbs., Dale O’Bila at 120 lbs., Gilbert Antillan at 138 lbs., Isaak Chavez at 157 lbs., Christopher Smith at 165 lbs., Oliver Scelza at 190 lbs., and Champion Dyes at 285 lbs.  Also contributing to the Regional Championship  was Amani Fuque’s 3rd-pace at 215 lbs., and Cooper Loth’s 5th-place finish at 150 lbs.
    The 2nd-Ranked Mustangs are off to the CHSAA State Wrestling Championships this Thursday through Saturday at Ball Arena.  
  • Coming out of the girls’ regional tournament, Jzunie Jones in the 170 pound weight class finished 2nd and will represent Mullen at the CHSAA State Wrestling Championships at Ball Arena tis Thursday through Saturday.
