Mullen adds Girls' Flag Football for Fall 2024

The gridiron is no longer just for boys on high school fields across Colorado. As of April 23rd, at the most recent CHSAA Legislative Council, state membership voted to approve girls’ flag football as a CHSAA-sanctioned sport starting in the fall of 2024, and Mullen is all in. Mullen is adding a 27th sport giving young ladies another option to choose from during the fall season.
Annually Mullen has hosted a flag football game between juniors and seniors, female students. This homecoming staple has been a part of Mullen's experience since the early 90s once Mullen went co-educational. These games are highly competitive, and the skill displayed over the years makes this a natural and seamless decision by Mullen to add Girls’ Flag Football to our Athletics program. We are looking for current and future Mustangs who are interested in being a part of the inaugural season of Flag Football. There are a lot of questions yet that must be answered about what this is all going to look like. There are a few state associations across the United States that govern flag football as a sanctioned sport and act as a model for Colorado’s vision of flag football. Each state runs its flag football a little differently from the other states. CHSAA recently formed a Flag Football Committee to review the many models out there and determine what would work best with our schools. The committee must also decide on the best model governing the dimensions of the field, along with several other rules from state to state. Instead of starting on a two-year cycle like most other sports, flag football will operate on back-to-back one-year cycles. This will allow schools that did not jump in this year to reconsider and field a team for year two instead of having to wait two whole years to get in. The one-year cycle, also, allows the flag football committee to tweak the rules and regulations as they see what works and what doesn't work in that first year.

What is certain, the Centennial League is equally invested in the launch of Flag Football. We already have a complete league schedule and all the league teams plan on carrying both Varsity and JV teams. We know that varsity games will have three officials and JV will have two. Mullen will carry 4-coaches for the program. If you or someone you know is interested in applying to be one of the inaugural coaches for the Fall 2024 Flag Football season, visit the Careers @ Mullen page for job descriptions and how to apply.
