Multiply Mullen Tax Credit

Beginning in January 2027, a historic new federal tax credit will give taxpayers across the country an unprecedented opportunity to redirect a portion of their federal income tax dollars toward educational scholarships.

There’s never been an opportunity quite like this in Colorado. Through the Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC), eligible taxpayers can receive a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit for qualifying contributions to an approved Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO)—up to $1,700 per individual taxpayer, or $3,400 combined for married couples filing jointly.

The initiative is being championed by Catholic education leaders, including the Archdiocese of Denver, as a powerful way to expand educational opportunities and strengthen Catholic schools.

For Mullen, the opportunity extends far beyond scholarships.

As new scholarship funding grows through our partnership with ACE Scholarships, Mullen can redirect more of its existing scholarship resources toward academic programs, expanded opportunities, and experiences that enrich the education of ALL Mullen students—not just those receiving scholarships.

More scholarship funding. More resources for our school. More possibilities for EVERY Mustang.

Our goal is bold: inspire every Mullen family to participate in the EFTC and invite others to join us.

Through this initiative, our 750 current families alone could generate up to $2.55 million in potential scholarship support. If each family brought one additional family into the effort, that possibility could reach $5.1 million.

And that is just the beginning.

The greater our participation, the greater our ability to invest in the programs, opportunities, and experiences that shape the Mullen education for every student, in every classroom, across our entire campus.

1. COMMIT — Start with You.

Participate at the maximum eligible amount if you can. The more of us who participate at that level, the greater our collective impact. Every dollar counts and every participant matters. Choose the amount that works for you. You can commit now and pay in January 2027!

2. CONNECT — Think Beyond Colorado.

Personally invite five families, ten if you can. Think grandparents, siblings, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Those you invite do not have to live in Colorado or have a student at Mullen to participate, subject to program eligibility. Share the link and tell them why Mullen matters to you.

3. MULTIPLY — Keep the Momentum Growing

Follow up with the people you've invited. Make sure they have the information they need to complete their commitments, and encourage them to invite five more families. Every new connection expands our reach, strengthens our impact, and multiplies what's possible for Mullen.

Multiply Mullen is a communitywide initiative inviting every Mullen family, alumnus, employee, and friend to participate in the new federal Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC) and encourage others to do the same.

Beginning January 2027, this historic opportunity allows eligible taxpayers to receive a dollar-for-dollar federal income tax credit for qualifying contributions to educational scholarships.

Our goal is bold: maximize participation, generate millions in potential new scholarship funding, and unlock resources that strengthen the Mullen experience for every student.
  • Q. How does Multiply Mullen benefit ALL Mullen students, even those who don’t receive scholarships?

This is what makes Multiply Mullen so exciting.

Contributions through the EFTC provide scholarships for eligible students. As new scholarship funding grows, Mullen can redirect more of its existing scholarship resources toward academic programs, expanded educational opportunities, and experiences that benefit ALL Mullen students—not just scholarship recipients.

More scholarship funding creates greater potential to invest in the programs, people, and experiences that define a Mullen education.

More scholarship funding. More resources for our school. More possibilities for every Mustang.
  • Q. Why is this a historic opportunity?

Established through federal legislation in 2025 and beginning in January 2027, the Education Freedom Tax Credit creates a new nationwide opportunity for taxpayers to support K–12 educational scholarships through a federal income tax credit.

Catholic education leaders, including the Archdiocese of Denver, are encouraging participation as a way to strengthen Catholic education and expand educational opportunities.

For Mullen, this is an unprecedented opportunity to bring new resources into our school community.
  • Q. How much could Multiply Mullen generate?

Mullen has approximately 750 current families. If each eligible household participates at $3,400, our community could generate as much as $2.55 million in potential scholarship contributions.

If each family invites one additional eligible household to participate at the same level, that possibility could reach $5.1 million.

    And that’s just the beginning.

These figures illustrate the potential of participation, rather than guaranteed scholarship allocations.

List of 14 frequently asked questions.

  • What is the Education Freedom Tax Credit?

The EFTC is a new federal income tax credit available beginning in 2027 for qualifying contributions to approved Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs).

Eligible taxpayers can receive a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit of up to $1,700 per individual taxpayer or $3,400 combined for married couples filing jointly, subject to applicable requirements.
  • How is a tax credit different from a tax deduction?

A tax deduction reduces the amount of income subject to tax.

A tax credit directly reduces the amount of federal income tax you owe.

For example, if you qualify for a $1,700 credit and have sufficient federal income tax liability, your federal income tax is reduced by $1,700.
  • Does this mean I can redirect money I would otherwise pay in federal income taxes?

Yes, provided you qualify for and can use the credit.

Rather than simply paying those dollars in federal income taxes, you can make a qualifying contribution through Mullen’s EFTC Portal and claim a corresponding dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit.

You make the contribution first and claim the credit when filing your federal income tax return.
  • Will participating affect my tax refund?

The EFTC reduces your federal income tax liability. Depending on your withholding, other credits, and individual circumstances, it may increase your refund or reduce the amount you owe when filing.

It does not automatically guarantee a cash refund.
  • What if I owe less than $1,700 in federal income taxes?

The EFTC is nonrefundable, meaning it cannot reduce your federal income tax liability below zero.

Unused qualifying credit may be carried forward for up to five years, subject to federal requirements.
  • Who can participate?

Eligible taxpayers can participate whether or not they have a student at Mullen.

We encourage parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, friends, neighbors, and colleagues to join the effort.
  • Do I have to live in Colorado?

No. Eligible taxpayers living outside Colorado can participate, subject to applicable federal program requirements.

This is why we’re asking our community to think beyond Colorado and invite family and friends nationwide.
  • Can married couples participate?

Yes. Married couples filing jointly may qualify for a combined federal tax credit of up to $3,400, subject to program requirements.
  • Can I participate if I already donate to Mullen?

Absolutely. Multiply Mullen is a separate opportunity from Mullen’s traditional charitable giving programs.

EFTC contributions must be made through an approved SGO rather than directly to Mullen. The same contribution cannot be used for both a federal charitable deduction and the EFTC.
  • Can I commit now and contribute in January 2027?

Yes! You can schedule your commitment now through Mullen’s EFTC Portal and arrange for your qualifying contribution to be made in January 2027.
  • Do I have to contribute the maximum amount?

    No. Every qualifying contribution matters.

We encourage participants to contribute at the maximum eligible amount when possible, but the decision is entirely yours.
  • How can I multiply my impact?

    There are three simple steps:

    COMMIT — Start with you.

Make your commitment through Mullen’s EFTC Portal. Participate at the maximum eligible amount if you can, or choose the amount that works for you.

    CONNECT — Think beyond Colorado.

Personally invite five families or individuals—ten if you can. Think grandparents, siblings, friends, neighbors, and colleagues.

MULTIPLY — Keep the momentum growing.

Follow up with those you’ve invited, answer questions by sharing our resources, and encourage them to invite five more families.

Every new connection expands our reach and multiplies what’s possible for Mullen.
  • Who processes my contribution and provides my tax documentation?

Mullen partners with ACE Scholarships, an approved Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO), to administer the Education Freedom Tax Credit.

All contributions are processed through Mullen’s designated EFTC Portal, with ACE managing scholarship administration, required donor documentation, and program reporting.

Mullen does not process contributions or issue tax documentation for this program. Donors claim their eligible credits when filing their federal income tax returns.
  • Can I designate my contribution for a specific student?

No. Contributions cannot be designated for an individual student or family. Scholarship awards are administered under applicable eligibility requirements.
