Mullen High School proudly announces that sophomore Nadia Carrasco '27 has earned third-place honors in the highly respected Congressional Institute’s Art Competition. Now in its 44th year, the annual Congressional Art Competition celebrates the creativity and talent of high school students across the United States. Each Member of Congress is invited to host the competition in their district, with winners selected by panels of local artists. Nadia's award-winning piece stood out among many impressive entries, highlighting her exceptional artistry and the strength of Mullen’s visual arts program.
The Congressional Art Competition is one of the highlights of the congressional calendar, with first-place winners from each district displaying their work for a year in the Cannon Tunnel — the most heavily trafficked walkway connecting the U.S. House of Representatives to the Capitol. Although Nadia’s piece will not be displayed in the tunnel this year, her achievement places her among the nation’s most promising young artists and reflects her dedication to her craft.
The piece was titled "Athena," as it depicts Athena, the Greek goddess. The medium used was acrylic paint. Students in Art 2 were asked to create a piece symbolic of a figure, alive or dead. Nadia describes the process of creating this work of art: "I’d never been into Greek Mythology, but she [Athena] popped into my head at the time. From then on, research on her assisted in how I would paint her. She was a strong and heroic figure, and her shield, spear, and helmet represented some form of that statement. The owl was just something she was commonly depicted with."
Nadia’s accomplishment is a testament to the vibrant arts community at Mullen High School, where students are encouraged to pursue excellence and express themselves creatively. Her success underscores the importance of fostering young talent and providing opportunities for students to showcase their work nationally.
Art is something I picked up as a child and it was one of few constants in my life. I grew to have an emotional connection with it, and as I advanced in my skills, it became part of my daily life. ~Nadia Carrasco '27
Students across the Denver area can continue expanding their artistic horizons through opportunities like the annual Archdiocesan Art Show, which was proudly hosted by Mullen High School this year. Events like these celebrate the importance of arts education and provide young artists with even more avenues to showcase their talents on a broader stage.
